Matteus 21:7

The KJB (King James Bible) has both “they set him thereon” and “he sat thereon”.

Will Kinney from Brandplucked: What we see here is that the Lord Jesus sat on both animals, either one at a time during His entry into Jerusalem – the young colt until it got tired of carrying the load and then He switched to the more mature mother ass, or else the disciples made a saddle out of their garments that were drapped over both animals standing side by side and Jesus then sat sideways upon the colt and leaned back upon the mother ass as He rode into the city. There is no contradiction at all.

My comment: Based on Luke 19:35 the first theory is more likely.

As for the Greek differences, the main one is that the KJB (King James Bible) has a plural verb – they set him thereon.

But the critical text has a singular verb – he sat on them.

Matthew 21:7 – 7 And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon.

Greek text of Scrivener – ηγαγον την ονον και τον πωλον και επεθηκαν επανω αυτων τα ιματια αυτων και επεκαθισαν επανω αυτων

Critical text Greek- ηγαγον την ονον και τον πωλον και επεθηκαν επ αυτων τα ιματια και επεκαθισεν επανω αυτων

ESV – They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them.

Darby – brought the ass and the colt and put their garments upon them, and he sat on them.

Will: Hi brother. Yes, there are textual differences here and Darby often rejected the TR (Textus Receptus) readings and went with the Critical text. His is a very mixed translation. That is why Darby reads differently than the KJB.

Here are the differences
